Methods for both experiments

Today we want to make sure that we have both methods completed, if you've already done that make sure that you've completed all other sections as well.

Vitamin C with iodine:
1.Measure out 3 ml of the drink.  Record the name in your table. Add 3 drops of starch to the drink.
2.Carefully use a pipette to add iodine, recording how much you need to make the juice blue.
3.Clean your glassware and repeat with another juice.

Benedict's solution:
1.Carefully measure out 2ml of a sugar solution into a test tube. Add 0.5ml of Benedict’s to make the solution blue.
2.Place the tube in the water bath, waiting a couple of minutes until it has changed colour.
3.Record the colour in your table, then repeat with another sugar solution.

Assignment write-up

Today we will be weriting up the experiments that we've carried out. Use the following headings to help you -
  1. Hypothesis - This is where you make a statement that was tested in your experiment, for example 'The Vitamin C content of different Orange drinks was the same/different'.
  2. Materials and Method - This is where you list the equipment you used and the steps you took to carry out your experiment. It should be detailed enough that anyone else could repeat your experiment.
  3. Results - Include a table of results, and describe what your results showed.
  4. Discussion - Answer the following questiosn in your discussion:
  • Are you confident in your results or not? Why?
  • What could you have done to improve your tests?
  • Do your results agree or disagree with other similar experiments?
5. Conclusion - Referring to your hypothesis, say whether your results support or disagree with your hypothesis. Explain the general trends in your results.

Sugar in drinks

Today we will be doing some work to prepare for the practical assignment.  As well as doing the questions below,
MAKE SURE YOU PRINT OUT YOUR FORENSICS SPEECH IF YOU HAVE IT SO WE CAN SUBMIT IT FOR YOUR ASSIGNMENT.

  1. What types of drinks have sugar in them? Name three. - http://www.sugarstacks.com/beverages.htm
  2. How much sugar does apple juice have per 240ml? What other drink is this the same as? - http://www.sugarstacks.com/beverages.htm
  3. What different types of sugar are there? Name three types - http://www.enotes.com/science/q-and-a/what-different-kinds-sugar-288699
  4. What health problems can sugar in our diets cause? - http://www.betterhealth.vic.gov.au/bhcv2/bhcarticles.nsf/pages/Sugar?open
  5. Watch this video.  What two things do oranges need to grow? What percentage of sugar do the oranges have to have?

6.     As well as using urine sticks, briefly explain one other way of testing for sugar in drinks:
7.     What is a reducing sugar? Give one example - http://www.livestrong.com/article/386795-the-definition-of-reducing-sugars/
8.     Look at  the powerpoint on this link ( copy 'results table independent dependent variable' into google   search. click on the link near th top titled - How science works: variables.  Don't worry about the physics stuff).   Where do the independent ad dependent variables go in the results table? (slide 16)
9.     Draw two tables that you could use for your results.  Remember were going to test the vitamin C and sugar content of different organge juice drinks.
